The Surge Prevention Valve is designed to protect pump stations against overpressure, sensing a low pressure condition before high pressure. It reduces high pressure build-up and protects the system from overpressure. The valve opens in response to a low or high pressure wave and is equipped with two pilots in parallel. Set below normal system operating pressure, the low pressure pilot adjustably shifts the valve to the open position using a flow limiter in response to the low pressure produced by the pumps shutting down. The relief pilot, set above the normal system operating pressure, opens the valve and keeps it open in response to excessive pressure. The valve is normally mounted on a bypass for a main pipeline to drain excess flow to atmosphere or a supply tank.
